After four decades of painting and fixing up homes, I’ve learned that most people simply hate to paint. But it is a well known fact that painting a home can have the maximum effect for a comparatively low investment when compared with other home improvements. Most people think about painting only as a last resort but
this is the worse area of your home to ignore if you are planning to place it on the market for sale.
There are many books on this subject and countless TV programs which endorse the idea of painting a house before trying to sell, but this is still an area most of us would like to ignore. Most rationalize that the new home owners will want to chose their own colors anyway after they move in. This can be a very costly mistake since in reality most home shoppers are looking for the home that is in “move-in” condition and doesn’t require any work. Lets face it, today with so many homes for sale, the savvy homeowner wants the shopper to remember their
home and seriously consider it on that first visit. If not, there probably will not be a second visit or an offer to purchase.
There are some simple home improvement painting tips that can help a home owner with his painting job. One of the most time consuming tasks associated with painting a house is ‘cutting in’. If you can master this job, not only will it speed up your entire house painting job but it will make it look professionally done as well. Many people think painting is an easy job and they don’t appreciate the challenges of even painting a single room. For example, walls and ceilings are almost never the same color, co the painter must has to paint the very top of the wall without
smearing paint onto the ceiling. This is what is known as ‘cutting in’ and is easily the most time consuming part of painting any room.
Even the professionals recognize the benefit of using masking tape on the surface you want to protect. You’ll find the standard blue colored painter’s tape in just about any home improvement store. The tape is made to be easily
removed and it will speed up any paint job. The mistake that many new painters make when using masking tape, they feel they can now just slop that paint on the wall as quickly as possible. Again, another wrong assumption on their parts. You should still hold the paint brush at the proper angle and ‘cut in’ by using just the tip of the brush for best results. This is the best technique to use along baseboards as well as around windows. In time, with enough practice you might be able to ‘cut-in’ rather then tape all areas. When you reach this level of skill you’ll find yourself flying through your paint jobs.
Regardless of the time and effort needed though, painting your home before placing it on the market just makes good sense. It is interesting that due to the widespread dislike by home owners for painting, the house painting business has always been an excellent source of income if you are so inclined.

Sometimes when somebody goes into the house painting business, they consider targeting one specific kind of painting. Many are finding success in the Interior Painting business.
By doing just interior painting you’re really making a wise decision. The very first advantage is you’re going to be less impacted by local weather and definitely will require less equipment in most cases. Although exterior painting generally requires tools including pressure washers, extension ladders and scaffolding, in most cases you will not need to have anywhere near the gear required for exterior work. Usually the one tool you should think of is a good commercial airless sprayer. Using the proper components these can be used as power rollers even in instances where paint spraying would probably not be appropriate.
A second secret is interior painting is a good deal less demanding on your body. While this doesn’t mean much when we are younger, as the years pass, dealing with those extension ladders can prove to be a workout. The majority of my colleagues have gone into interior work once they got into their 50′s. So we can likely say the interior painting business is much better overall.
Another great point is that interior jobs are more financially rewarding also. There are 2 kinds of interior painting to take into account and they are new construction and re-paints of older residences. You certainly will always find more competitors for painting new construction and less profit. The majority of big companies with big crews require new construction jobs to keep their crews operating. So their prices will be pretty low because of it being production type work.
The negative side to repainting some older houses is needless to say you must work around the home’s furniture and manage the home owners. This demands more care and preparation time but of course this is certainly reflected with your billing. I’ve known men who like simply charging a flat rate like $300 and up per room based upon the size and detail. Although I also know some who’ve become well known custom painters and earn over one hundred thousand dollars year in year out by simply doing custom interior work. If you would like to produce this kind of income you need to focus on your workmanship and build a good reputation.
It makes sense to target interior painting if you value dealing with property owners and want to work all year round. You will see nothing more profitable than the interior painting business serving residential clients. After a couple of years of positive reviews you’ll find a growing customer base which might be expanded to include real estate agents and property investors. You will find more information on building that client base in our house painting business strategy.
