Today it is not uncommon at all to find high end sound systems everything from motor yachts and sailing sloops down to weekend cruisers and bass boats. Modern
marine stereo components allow boat owners to enjoy the same quality of music as they have grown accoustomed to enjoying while in their cars or trucks.
At one time a boat owner had to depend upon a boombox or be prepared to replace their car audio speakers each year. Standard car audio speakers simply cannot stand up to the harsh marine environment. But today the majority of best known car audio manufacturers are providing top end
marine speakers which are especially made for marine use.
The first step in selecting marine speakers is to determine exactly where the speakers will be mounted. A good thing to remember is that although modern marine speakers are water resistant, they are not water proof. So some care should be taken to mount them out of the way of direct spray.
Another thing to consider is how will they be powered. If you are mounting speakers inside a cabin of a yacht, you can focus only on sound quality but if mounting in an open area of any boat, you have to realize that you will have a certain amount of background noise to content with. This means you should power your speakers with a
marine amplifier. The amplifier should be installed in the cabin or some enclosed area to prevent the electronics from getting wet.
You can also add a marine subwoofer into your system to provide that rich sounding bass. You might be able to incorporate it into existing cabinetry to prevent the need for a separate speaker enclosure.
Finally you can select the proper souce unit for your system. You will find new marine stereo receivers capable of playing CD, MP3, WMA and all your favorite music direct from your iPod. While you should also try to mount your source unit out of the direct path of any water spray, you can also purchase waterproof covers to protect the electronics.
