Must I Purchase a .com Domain Extension?

I’ve heard both sides of this debate from different marketers over the years, but primarily the answer most would give to that question is yes, it does make a difference. That for some reason, Google gives more “appreciation” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.

The people that have said this to me say that it is get when you enter a search phrase into the search engines, the top sites are almost always going to be .com or .org.

Yes, this is generally true, however I have another idea that you should consider when deciding which extension you are going to purchase.

There are many, many, many more .com and .org websites on the Internet than there are .info. This statement alone could explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domain names in their top listings. I am not saying that it is not possible that the search engines like .com or .org, I am simply bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domain extensions should be on page one of the search results most of the time, there are 10′s, even 100′s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.

I myself have way more .com websites. I like them because when people enter domain names into their address bar they usually to enter .com. So, by simply buying a .com you will ensure they go to your website. If the website you chose in a .com has a .info available and you purchase it, then as the person goes to type it into their address bar, it is likely that unless they were really attentive, they will be entering in .com. And so rather than going to your website, they would go to someone else’s.

I do have a few .info extensions however and as far as a SEO stand point I have discovered that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. So, for SEO purposes it doesn’t seem to matter which extension you buy. The search engine optimization side comes down more to your keyword phrases and links than to the domain extension you buy.

Therefore, when purchasing your domain it comes down to your preference. Do you care ifthey accidentally enter .com instead of .info (or even .net)? Your answer to this question will help you chose which domain name extension you go with.
